Most Anticipated Movies of 2016: 10 – 1

Continuing my list of the most anticipated movies of 2016, here are my top 10 movies.  A lot of intriguing titles from a lot of great filmmakers and a nice mix of big blockbusters and awards contenders.  Definitely keep your eye out for these titles.  And if you missed numbers 20 – 11, check them out right here.

10 – The Girl on the Train (Tate Taylor, October 7)

Based on the best selling novel, this is said to be this year’s Gone Girl (2014).  Hopefully this will be the movie that will finally get Emily Blunt her long overdue Oscar nomination.

9 – Story of Your Life (Denis Villeneuve, TBA)

Villeneuve is one of the best and most under-appreciated directors working today, having made the masterpiece Prisoners (2013) and last year’s cartel thriller Sicario.  Story of Your Life brings him into the sci-fi genre and stars Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, two of my favorite actors working today.  I can’t wait to see what Villeneuve brings us next.

8 – Everybody Wants Some (Richard Linklater, April 1)

Richard Linklater’s follow up to his award winning Boyhood (2014) has been described by the director as a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused (1993).  Seeing as Dazed and Confused is one of my all-time favorites and I’d watch anything Linklater, this is bound to be an entertaining nostalgia piece with great 80’s music.

7 – Captain America: The Civil War (Anthony & Joe Russo, May 6)

With the addition of a few new heroes, including the highly anticipated Black Panther, and a battle for the ages between the Captain and Iron Man, this has the potential to be the best movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

6 – Midnight Special (Jeff Nichols, March 18)

Nichols, much like Villeneuve, is one of the most under-appreciated directors today, having made the haunting Take Shelter (2011) and the wildly entertaining Mud (2013).  Starring Joel Edgerton and Nichols’ favorite Michael Shannon, Midnight Special sounds like old school Spielberg with a modern twist.

5 – X-Men: Apocalypse (Bryan Singer, May 27)

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) is in my top five comic book movies of all-time.  Adding new characters, including the baddest bad guy of them all, Apocalypse (played by the great Oscar Isaac), this could take the franchise to whole other level.

4 – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Gareth Edwards, December 16)

The first Star Wars film not part of the original origin story is intriguing enough.  But, coming off the massive success of The Force Awakens (2015) and with director Gareth Edwards at the helm (who did marvelous work on 2014’s Godzilla) and an excellent cast led by Felicity Jones, I expect yet another great film from the legendary film series.

3 – La La Land (Damien Chazelle, July 16)

Chazelle rocked the cinematic world in 2014 with his debut film, Whiplash.  Now, he’s back, in what looks and sounds like a classic Hollywood musical of the 1930’s, which, since I’m a sucker for musicals and classic cinema, excites the hell out of me.  And, it stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who have proven to have excellent chemistry in Crazy Stupid Love (2011) and Gangster Squad (2013).

2 – Finding Dory (Andrew Stanton and Angus MacLane, June 17)

Dory is one of my favorite characters not only in the Pixar world, but in any movie ever made.  Ellen DeGeneres as Dory is probably the greatest voice acting after Robin Williams as the Genie is Aladdin (1992).  Finding Nemo (2003) is a cinematic masterpiece and I expect this to be the same.  The last time Pixar released a sequel ten-plus years after the last one, was Toy Story 3 (2010), which might be the studio’s greatest achievement to date.

1 – Silence (Martin Scorsese, TBA)

Martin Scorsese is my favorite director of all-time.  Coming off the success of the drug-fuel masterpiece The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Scorsese goes to a passion project with Silence.  The last passion project Scorsese did was Gangs of New York (2002), which is one of the most important films of my cinematic life.  A great cast and interesting story that tailor made for Scorsese’s amazing visuals and use of violence, Silence is absolutely my most anticipated movie of 2016.
